Rwanda Visa for Australian Citizens: Entry Requirements

Australian citizens traveling on an ordinary Australian passport can obtain a Rwanda visa on arrival for a visit of up to 30 days without paying the visa fee. This arrangement applies because Australia is a Commonwealth member. You do not need to obtain a Rwanda eVisa online before departure for this 30-day arrival route.

The information on this page applies to travelers using an ordinary Australian passport. Different rules may apply to diplomatic, official or other travel documents.

Do Australian citizens need a visa for Rwanda?

Australian citizens can obtain a visa or visitor permission on arrival in Rwanda for a 30-day visit, with the visa fee waived. They do not need to secure a Rwanda eVisa before departure to use this arrangement. The rule applies to Australia as a Commonwealth member and covers visits other than employment.

Rwanda has allowed citizens of all countries to obtain visas on arrival without prior application since 1 January 2018. In addition, citizens of Commonwealth member countries receive a 30-day visa on arrival with the visa fee waived.

This distinction is important: the arrangement should not simply be described as “visa-free travel.” Rwanda's official immigration guidance describes immigration permission being issued on arrival while waiving the applicable visa fee.

Rwanda visa requirements for Australian citizens

Australian passport holders using Rwanda's 30-day Commonwealth arrangement should meet Rwanda's general visitor entry requirements. A visa or permission to enter does not by itself guarantee admission; the final entry decision remains with Rwandan immigration authorities at the border.

Passport validity

Your Australian passport should be a genuine, acceptable travel document valid for at least six months when applying for or receiving the relevant Rwanda visitor permission.

If you renew or replace your passport before traveling, make sure the passport you present at the border is the document associated with any advance application you may have made.

Documents you may need at the border

In addition to your valid passport, be prepared to provide information or evidence relevant to your visit if requested by Rwandan immigration authorities.

Rwanda's immigration guidance states that visitors must have sufficient funds to cover their stay, and evidence of those funds may be requested at the entry point. A vaccination certificate may also be required where applicable, including when specific public-health requirements are in effect.

Your travel purpose must also be consistent with the visitor route you are using. The ordinary visitor or holiday route does not permit employment in Rwanda.

Length of stay

For Australian citizens covered by the Commonwealth arrangement, the fee-waived visa or visitor permission on arrival is valid for a 30-day visit.

Do not confuse this 30-day arrangement with Rwanda's separate 90-day free-on-arrival arrangement for certain specifically listed nationalities. Australia is covered by the Commonwealth 30-day arrangement.

Information verified as of September 2026.

Is the Rwanda visa on arrival free for Australians?

Yes. Australian citizens are currently eligible for a 30-day Rwanda visa on arrival with the visa fee waived because Australia is a Commonwealth member.

Rwanda's Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration states that citizens of Commonwealth member countries receive a visa upon arrival and are waived visa fees for a visit of 30 days.

This waiver concerns the applicable government visa fee for the qualifying arrival arrangement. It should not be confused with fees charged by private visa assistance providers if a traveler voluntarily chooses a commercial application service.

For most Australian tourists planning a straightforward visit of no more than 30 days, the free arrival arrangement means there is generally no need to purchase private Tourist eVisa assistance simply to enter Rwanda.

Review the Rules for Your Passport before departure to make sure your itinerary and purpose still fit the 30-day arrangement.

How long can Australian citizens stay in Rwanda?

Australian citizens using Rwanda's Commonwealth fee-waived arrangement can visit for 30 days. The official immigration guidance specifies a 30-day period for citizens of Commonwealth, African Union and La Francophonie member countries using this arrangement.

Travelers who want to remain longer should not assume that the free arrival permission automatically provides a longer stay. The appropriate route depends on the purpose and intended duration of the visit.

Rwanda's immigration guidance provides for extensions for some visa classes. Where an extension is available, it should be requested while the existing immigration permission remains valid.

Do Australians need to apply for a Rwanda eVisa online?

No. Australian citizens do not need to complete a Rwanda eVisa application before departure to use the standard 30-day fee-waived visa-on-arrival arrangement.

This is an important difference between Rwanda eVisa availability and Rwanda eVisa requirements for Australian citizens. Rwanda provides online visa application routes for eligible travelers, but the existence of an online application system does not mean every visitor must use it.

For an Australian tourist taking a normal trip of up to 30 days, the current Commonwealth arrangement allows immigration permission to be obtained at the border without paying the visa fee.

Travelers with a different purpose—such as employment, study, residence or another specialized activity—should check the visa or permit appropriate to that purpose instead of relying on a tourist eVisa.

Rwanda visa options for stays longer than 30 days

Australians planning to stay beyond the standard 30-day Commonwealth arrangement should check the immigration route that matches their purpose rather than assuming a Tourist eVisa provides the required longer stay.

Rwanda has different immigration classes for different activities. The V1 holiday visa, for example, is intended for holiday, sightseeing, social, recreational and other qualifying short-term non-work visits. Rwanda's official rules state that extensions may be available in exceptional circumstances.

Other purposes can require different immigration routes. Conference and meeting visitors, prospective workers, students, residents and travelers conducting other specialized activities should use the route applicable to their actual reason for staying in Rwanda.

Employment is not permitted under the ordinary holiday visitor route.

If your planned stay exceeds 30 days, check the current Rwanda visa requirements for your purpose before traveling rather than overstaying the permission issued at entry.

East Africa Tourist Visa for Australian citizens

The East Africa Tourist Visa can be relevant to Australian travelers visiting Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on the same tourism itinerary. It is generally unnecessary for a trip limited to Rwanda, particularly when an Australian traveler qualifies for Rwanda's 30-day fee-waived arrival arrangement.

The East Africa Tourist Visa is a separate multi-country tourism option covering Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. According to Rwanda's immigration authority, it costs US$100, is valid for 90 days, and permits multiple entries while the traveler remains within the participating countries.

When an East Africa Tourist Visa is obtained through Rwanda before travel, Rwanda must be the traveler's first entry point under the official guidance.

The visa is intended for tourism and must not be used for employment.

For a Rwanda-only holiday of 30 days or less, compare the EATV carefully with the fee-waived Rwanda arrival arrangement before deciding whether the multi-country visa is useful.

Rwanda transit requirements for Australians

A Rwanda transit visa is intended for travelers who need to transit through Rwanda and use the transit immigration route; it allows a stay of up to 72 hours. Australian travelers should first determine whether their connection actually requires them to enter Rwanda rather than assuming every airport connection requires a transit visa.

Rwanda's VT transit visa is single entry and valid for a period not exceeding 72 hours. It can be applied for on arrival, online or through another location designated by Rwanda's immigration authority.

The official transit rules state that the US$30 transit visa fee is waived for nationals covered by Rwanda's visa-waiver arrangements, including Commonwealth nationals. An Australian passport holder using the qualifying transit route therefore falls within that fee-waiver provision.

Work is not permitted on a transit visa.
