Rwanda Visa for Bulgarian Citizens: Entry Requirements

Bulgarian passport holders should not assume that a paid Rwanda eVisa is compulsory before departure. Rwanda’s High Commission lists Bulgaria under a 30-day visa-on-arrival arrangement with the visa fee waived. However, Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes visa-free stays of up to 90 days. These official descriptions differ, so confirm the applicable entry permission and stay limit before travelling.

Do Bulgarian Citizens Need to Apply Before Travelling?

Rwanda’s Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration states that citizens of all countries may obtain a visa on arrival without a prior application. This route is available at Kigali International Airport and all land borders.

Its guidance also provides a visa fee waiver for 30-day visits by citizens of La Francophonie member countries. Bulgaria is an OIF member state. Advance online application should therefore not be presented as a universal requirement for Bulgarian visitors.

Why Do Official Sources Mention Different Stay Limits?

The sources reviewed describe the Bulgarian route as follows:

Official sourcePublished guidanceWhat needs attention
Rwanda High Commission in the United KingdomBulgaria is explicitly included in the 30-day visa-on-arrival fee-waiver listThis describes an arrival visa with no visa fee
Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign AffairsBulgarian ordinary, official and diplomatic passport holders may visit without a visa for up to 90 daysThis differs in both terminology and duration

The Bulgarian travel-advice page displays an update date of 21 October 2025. The Rwanda High Commission page reviewed does not establish when its nationality list last changed. Retrieval dates alone cannot establish which description supersedes the other.

Before arranging a stay beyond 30 days, request confirmation from Rwanda’s immigration authority or a competent Rwandan diplomatic mission. Ask specifically about an ordinary Bulgarian passport, your travel purpose and intended dates. Follow the permission and departure deadline issued for your visit.

Documents and Entry Checks to Prepare

Rwanda’s general visitor guidance requires:

  • A genuine, acceptable travel document valid for at least six months.
  • Sufficient funds to cover the visit; evidence may be requested.
  • Compliance with applicable health requirements.

Keep your accommodation details and onward travel plans available to explain your itinerary. Document requirements for an advance application depend on the selected category and should be checked separately from border-entry requirements.

Applying Online Before Departure

If an advance application is appropriate for your trip, Rwanda provides an official online channel through IremboGov.

To prepare an application:

  1. Select Visa Application and choose the category matching your purpose.
  2. Enter your nationality, passport and travel information.
  3. Upload the documents requested for that category.
  4. Review the details and submit.
  5. Follow any applicable payment instructions and retain your reference.

IremboGov lists a passport biodata-page copy, a photograph with a white background and an application letter among common attachments. Requirements vary by visa type. Applications for free visas proceed to processing without the payment step.

Rwanda Visa Fees and Private Service Charges

Rwanda’s published 30-day arrangement waives the visa fee for qualifying Bulgarian visitors. This should not be confused with a commercial provider’s service or administrative charges.

Rwanda Immigration Services is an independent commercial website. Its advertised charges are separate from applying directly through official channels. A private invoice should not be described as the official visa fee without identifying its components.

Longer Stays and Multi-Country Trips

For a longer Rwanda visit, confirm the applicable permission before relying on either published stay limit. DGIE states that extension procedures depend on the visa class and applications should be made while the existing visa remains valid.

For tourism covering Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda, the East Africa Tourist Visa may be relevant. Rwanda’s guidance lists a US$100 fee, 90-day validity and multiple entries within the participating countries. When obtained before travel through Rwanda, Rwanda must be the first entry country. Visitor and East Africa Tourist visas do not permit employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an online Rwanda visa compulsory before departure?

Rwanda publishes a visa-on-arrival route without prior application. Do not purchase an online visa solely because you assume advance application is compulsory.

Can Bulgarian citizens automatically stay for 90 days?

The official sources reviewed do not provide a consistent answer. Obtain confirmation for your passport and itinerary before planning a stay beyond 30 days.

Does the fee waiver cover every visa or service?

Do not assume it does. The Rwanda nationality list describes a specific 30-day arrangement, while commercial charges and other visa categories must be assessed separately.
