Gambian Visitors: Rwanda’s Free 30-Day Arrival Visa

Gambian citizens travelling on ordinary passports for a short holiday can obtain a Rwanda visa on arrival with the government visa fee waived for a visit of up to 30 days. An advance eVisa application is not compulsory for this route. Travellers must still satisfy immigration and health requirements before admission.

Why Gambian Visitors Qualify for the Fee Waiver

Rwanda grants a 30-day arrival-visa fee waiver to nationals of African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie member countries. The Gambia is a Commonwealth member, so Gambian passport holders fall within this arrangement.

The benefit follows your nationality, rather than your departure airport or country of residence. Someone living in The Gambia who travels on another country’s passport must check the rules for that nationality.

Choose Permission That Matches Your Trip

Your travel plans
What to check
A Rwanda holiday of up to 30 days
Use the eligible arrival route and complete border formalities.
You prefer an advance application
Check the appropriate category on the official IremboGov portal.
You will leave Rwanda and return
Confirm permission covering your intended entries.
Your visit will exceed the permission granted
Consult DGIE about renewal or the appropriate permit.
You intend to take employment
Obtain the relevant immigration permission before working.

DGIE lists the organisational waiver arrangement as single entry and does not permit employment. Do not assume that leaving Rwanda and returning is covered by the original permission.

Prepare Your Passport and Travel Records

Your Gambian passport must be valid for at least six months on the date you enter Rwanda.

For practical preparation, keep these records readily available:

  • Your accommodation address or host’s contact details.
  • Your return or onward itinerary.
  • Records showing how you will fund the trip.
  • Your advance visa approval, if you obtained one.

These are useful supporting records; this list is not a universal mandatory upload checklist for a visa issued on arrival.

If you have obtained advance approval, carry that approval and the passport used for the application. Keep passport names, numbers and travel details consistent.

Check Health Rules for Travel from The Gambia

Yellow fever documentation

Rwanda Biomedical Centre lists The Gambia among countries with yellow fever transmission risk. Its guidance requires a valid vaccination certificate from travellers coming from endemic countries or countries with an active outbreak.

If travelling from The Gambia, prepare your certificate before departure. RBC identifies certificates issued less than 10 days after vaccination as invalid for the entry checks it describes. These conditions depend on your itinerary and travel history, rather than Gambian nationality alone.

COVID-19 and temporary restrictions

RBC states that COVID-19 testing is no longer required before boarding a flight to Rwanda. Check separate requirements imposed by transit countries or your airline.

Also review outbreak notices. RBC’s notice dated 16 June 2026 states that foreign visitors who travelled to or transited through the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the preceding 30 days would be denied entry; separate provisions apply to Rwandan nationals and foreign residents of Rwanda. If this affects your itinerary, confirm the latest position with RBC and DGIE before departure.

What to Do at Rwanda Immigration

Visas on arrival are available at Kigali International Airport and Rwanda’s land borders. Present your passport, explain your visit accurately and provide any supporting information requested.

Before leaving the checkpoint, check the authorised departure date and entry conditions recorded by immigration. Plan your stay around that permission. Eligibility for an arrival visa does not guarantee admission.

Prefer to Apply Online Before Departure?

If you choose an advance application, use the official IremboGov visa service:

  1. Select Visa Application under Immigration and Emigration.
  2. Choose the category that matches your visit.
  3. Enter your nationality, passport and travel information.
  4. Upload the documents requested for that category.
  5. Review the information and submit the application.
  6. Follow payment instructions only where a fee applies.

Common attachments include a passport biodata-page copy, a photograph with a white background and an application letter. Requirements vary by category.

IremboGov’s guidance, updated on 27 August 2026, lists a processing time of four days. Allow additional time for queries or incomplete documents; this is not a guarantee of approval by a particular date.

Understand the Cost Before Paying

For the qualifying 30-day arrival arrangement, the government visa fee is zero. Commercial assistance charges are separate, and paying an agency is not necessary to use this route.

Rwanda Immigration Services is an independent commercial provider, not Rwanda’s immigration authority. Any provider quote should distinguish its service and administrative charges from the official visa fee.

Before making travel arrangements, review the official Rwanda entry guidance. For questions about information on this website, visit our contact page; contacting us is optional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 30-day fee waiver the same as having no visa formalities?

No. DGIE describes a visa issued on arrival with the fee waived. You must still complete immigration checks.

Does The Gambia qualify for Rwanda’s separate 90-day nationality arrangement?

The Gambia is not included in DGIE’s published list of countries granted the separate free 90-day arrival visa. Plan around the applicable 30-day arrangement unless another permission has been issued.

Must I upload a passport scan before travelling?

An advance upload is not compulsory for the eligible arrival route. Online applications have their own attachment requirements.

Can I stay longer simply because my visa was free?

No. Seek the appropriate renewal or permit before your authorised stay expires. Further permission is not automatic.
