Before You Fly: Rwanda Visa Rules for Guinea-Bissau
Citizens of Guinea-Bissau travelling to Rwanda for a short holiday can obtain a visa on arrival without paying the government visa fee for a visit of up to 30 days. An advance eVisa application is not compulsory for this route. You must still meet passport, health and immigration requirements, and the permission issued at the border determines your authorised stay.

Check the Passport Country: Guinea-Bissau Is Not Guinea
Rwanda’s published visa arrangements distinguish Guinea-Bissau from Guinea. The Rwanda High Commission in Kenya explicitly lists Guinea-Bissau under the 30-day visa-on-arrival fee waiver. Guinea appears in the separate 90-day arrangement.
Select Guinea-Bissau when entering your nationality in an application or checking travel requirements. Do not use the rules for Guinea simply because the country names are similar.
The waiver concerns the government visa charge; it does not remove arrival formalities or guarantee admission.
Choose Your Route Before Making a Payment
| Travel plan | Appropriate next step | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday of up to 30 days | Use the eligible visa-on-arrival route | Government visa fee waived; entry checks still apply |
| Prefer to apply before departure | Consult the official IremboGov visa application service | Advance application is optional for the eligible arrival route |
| Leave Rwanda and return | Confirm permission covering all intended entries | The relevant waiver category is single entry |
| Stay beyond your current permission | Ask DGIE about the applicable renewal or permit | Apply before current permission expires |
| Take employment in Rwanda | Check the appropriate employment permission | Visitor permission does not authorise work |
The visitor category’s entry conditions must match your itinerary. A short-stay fee waiver does not provide unrestricted re-entry or permission to work.
Prepare Your Passport and Supporting Records
Your passport must remain valid for at least six months when entering Rwanda. This means remaining validity, not that the passport must have been issued six months earlier. You must also have sufficient funds to cover your visit; immigration officials may request evidence.
For practical preparation, keep these records accessible:
- Your accommodation details or host’s address.
- Your return or onward itinerary.
- Evidence of available funds.
- Any advance visa approval, if you chose to apply online.
Accommodation and itinerary records are useful supporting documents here, rather than a claim that every traveller must upload them before using the arrival route.

Check Yellow Fever Rules Against Your Actual Itinerary
Rwanda Biomedical Centre lists Guinea-Bissau among countries with yellow fever transmission risk. Travellers arriving from Guinea-Bissau should carry a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Rwanda requires this certificate for travellers coming from yellow fever endemic countries or countries with an active outbreak.
For an initial vaccination, allow at least 10 days before travel. If you cannot be vaccinated, obtain medical advice and confirm the applicable entry procedure with the Rwandan authorities before departure.
The rule depends on where you have travelled, not only the nationality printed in your passport.
The RBC traveller page also displays a notice dated 22 May 2026 restricting entry for foreign visitors who travelled to or transited through the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the preceding 30 days. Different arrangements apply to Rwandan nationals and qualifying Rwanda residents. If your itinerary involves DRC, check the latest official notice before booking or travelling.
What Happens When You Arrive in Rwanda?
Rwanda’s immigration authority provides visas on arrival at Kigali International Airport and land borders. Present your passport and explain the purpose and expected length of your visit.
Check the permission issued before leaving the immigration checkpoint, including its expiry date and entry conditions. Plan your departure around that permission. Do not assume the fee waiver provides an automatic extension or unrestricted re-entry.
Applying Online Is an Alternative, Not a Prerequisite
If you prefer to arrange a visa before departure, use the official IremboGov service and select the category appropriate to your visit.
- Open Visa Application under Immigration and Emigration.
- Enter your nationality, passport and travel details accurately.
- Upload the documents requested for the selected visa type.
- Review and submit your application.
- Follow any applicable payment instructions.
Common online attachments include a passport biodata-page copy, a photograph with a white background and an application letter. These are online application requirements, not a universal pre-travel upload checklist for arrival visas.
IremboGov publishes a processing time of four days. Allow time for review and additional requests; this is not a guarantee of approval. Applications for free visas are forwarded for processing without the payment step.
Government Visa Fees and Private Service Charges
The qualifying 30-day arrival visa has no government visa fee. Other visa categories may have different charges.
A private provider’s service charge is separate from a government visa fee. Purchasing assistance is not required to use the eligible arrival route.
Rwanda Immigration Services is an independent commercial website, not Rwanda’s immigration authority. before paying for assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the 90-day rule published for Guinea?
No. Guinea and Guinea-Bissau are separate countries. Guinea-Bissau is explicitly included in the published 30-day fee-waiver list.
Do I need an eVisa before a short holiday?
You do not need an advance eVisa application to use the eligible visa-on-arrival route. Online application is an alternative.
Must every Guinea-Bissau passport holder show a yellow fever certificate?
Assess the itinerary. Travellers coming from Guinea-Bissau fall under the published yellow fever risk-country guidance. Passport nationality alone does not determine the health requirement.
Can I work under the visitor arrangement?
No. The relevant visitor category does not permit employment. Check the appropriate immigration permission for your plans.
How should I arrange a longer stay?
Consult DGIE about the applicable renewal or permit while your current permission is still valid. Approval of further permission is not automatic.
Before departure, review Rwanda’s official visa-on-arrival guidance and current health notices.
