Rwanda Visa Requirements for Swiss Citizens
Swiss ordinary-passport holders can currently obtain visa/visitor permission on arrival in Rwanda for a visit of up to 30 days with the visa fee waived. Online pre-application is not required for this standard short-visit arrangement. Travelers must still meet Rwanda’s passport, health and border-entry requirements.
Do Swiss Citizens Need a Visa for Rwanda?
Swiss citizens do not need to obtain a Rwanda visa online before traveling for an eligible short visit of up to 30 days. Rwanda grants citizens of La Francophonie member countries visa/visitor permission on arrival and waives the visa fee for a 30-day visit. Switzerland is currently an OIF member.
This arrangement is more accurately described as a 30-day fee-waived visa/visitor arrangement rather than simply saying that Rwanda is visa-free for Swiss citizens. Rwanda’s immigration information distinguishes fee-waived permission for La Francophonie citizens from its separate 90-day free-on-arrival arrangement for specified nationalities. Switzerland is not listed in that separate 90-day group.
The rule above concerns ordinary short visits. Travelers planning to work, study, reside in Rwanda or undertake another specialized activity should check the visa or permit appropriate to that purpose.

Rwanda Entry Requirements for Swiss Passport Holders
Swiss citizens using the 30-day arrangement must still satisfy Rwanda’s entry requirements. Immigration permission does not by itself guarantee admission; final entry remains subject to checks by Rwandan authorities at the border.
Passport validity
Swiss travelers should carry a genuine, acceptable passport or other qualifying travel document that is valid for at least six months. Rwanda’s current visitor-visa guidance applies the six-month travel-document requirement to its visitor routes.
The nationality rules on this page apply to ordinary Swiss passports. Diplomatic, service, official or other travel documents may be subject to different arrangements.
Travel and supporting documents
Travelers should be prepared to provide the information or supporting evidence requested by border officials for their intended visit. Depending on the circumstances and travel purpose, this may include details of accommodation, onward or return travel and the purpose of the trip.
If a traveler applies for a visa online rather than using the standard Swiss short-visit arrangement, additional application documents may be required according to the visa class.
Health requirements
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is not required solely because a traveler holds a Swiss passport. Rwanda Biomedical Centre states that travelers arriving from countries without yellow fever risk or an active outbreak do not require the certificate. Travelers arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country or a country with an active transmission outbreak are subject to different requirements.
Travelers should also check their recent itinerary, not only their departure airport.
Current health-entry notice: Rwanda Biomedical Centre announced enhanced Ebola prevention measures on 22 May 2026. Under the current published notice, foreign nationals who have traveled to or transited through the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the 30 days before intended travel to Rwanda are denied entry. Because public-health measures can change quickly, travelers with recent DRC travel should verify the current rule before departure.
How Long Can Swiss Citizens Stay in Rwanda?
Swiss citizens using Rwanda’s La Francophonie arrangement can visit for up to 30 days under the fee-waived route. Rwanda’s visitor guidance states that the relevant arrangement for citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie countries is valid for 30 days.
Other visas have their own periods and conditions. For example, Rwanda’s V1 holiday visa can be issued as a multiple-entry visa valid for 90 days. The East Africa Tourist Visa is a separate option intended for eligible tourism itineraries involving Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda.
Do not assume that having a longer-validity visa automatically authorizes work or another purpose. Rwanda’s V1 holiday visa does not permit work.

Rwanda Visa Fees for Swiss Citizens
For the ordinary 30-day Swiss short-visit arrangement, the Rwanda visa fee is waived. Other visa products can carry government fees.
| Travel situation | Requirement | Period | Government fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible short visit | 30-day fee-waived arrangement | Up to 30 days | Free |
| V1 multiple-entry holiday visa | Visa required | 90-day validity | USD 70 |
| East Africa Tourist Visa | EATV | 90-day tourism arrangement* | USD 100 |
Rwanda’s DGIE currently publishes a USD 70 government fee and 90-day validity for a multiple-entry V1 holiday visa. It publishes a USD 100 government fee for the East Africa Tourist Visa.
*The East Africa Tourist Visa is a distinct regional tourism product. Its use and entry rules are governed by the participating-country arrangement; it should not be selected simply to obtain a longer period for a Rwanda-only trip.
These are Rwanda government visa fees, not the total price of using a private application-assistance service. Rwanda Immigration Services may charge separate commercial service or administrative fees.
When Do Swiss Travelers Need to Apply for a Rwanda Visa?
Swiss travelers generally do not need to submit an online visa application for an eligible 30-day short visit under the La Francophonie fee-waived arrangement. A different visa route becomes relevant when the traveler’s intended stay, number of entries or purpose falls outside that arrangement.
For example, a traveler may need to check another route when planning multiple entries, a longer stay, a conference or meeting, regional tourism using an East Africa Tourist Visa, or activities such as work, study or residence.
Tourist or visitor status must not be used as work authorization. Rwanda’s V1 holiday route expressly does not permit work.
How to Apply for a Rwanda Visa Online
Online application is not necessary for the standard 30-day Swiss fee-waived visit. Swiss travelers who need or choose another supported visa route should first identify the correct visa according to their travel purpose.
Rwanda’s V1 holiday visa, for example, can be issued at the border, online, through immigration authorities or through a Rwandan diplomatic mission.
Documents required
Requirements depend on the visa being requested. Applicants should normally expect to provide a valid passport and personal and travel information. Rwanda Immigration Services’ online application process also requests a passport-page image and applicant photograph for its eVisa application assistance.
Purpose-specific visas can require additional evidence. Travelers should therefore check the requirements for the exact visa class rather than relying on a generic tourist-visa checklist.
Application steps
For travelers who need a supported online visa route:
- Confirm the correct visa according to nationality, travel purpose, length of stay and required entries.
- Complete the application using information that matches the passport.
- Provide the requested passport, photograph and supporting documents.
- Review the application details carefully before submission.
- Pay the applicable government and, when using a private assistance provider, commercial service charges.
- Monitor the application and follow any request for additional information.
Swiss travelers making an ordinary eligible visit of up to 30 days can instead use Rwanda’s current fee-waived arrival arrangement.
Processing time
Processing times should not be confused with the time a private service takes to review or handle an application. Rwanda Immigration Services publishes commercial processing options for applications submitted through its service; these are service-handling estimates rather than guaranteed Rwanda government decision times.
Travelers who require a visa before a fixed departure date should allow sufficient time for government processing and any request for additional documents.
Private-service disclosure: Rwanda-Immigration.org is a private visa application assistance website and is not affiliated with the Government of Rwanda. Travelers may also use official Rwanda government channels where applicable. Commercial service charges may apply when using private application assistance.
Rwanda Visa on Arrival for Swiss Citizens
Yes. Swiss citizens can currently obtain their applicable Rwanda immigration permission on arrival without submitting a prior application. Rwanda has permitted citizens of all countries to obtain a visa on arrival since 1 January 2018, while citizens of La Francophonie member countries receive a fee waiver for a 30-day visit.
This means an eligible Swiss traveler does not need to purchase a tourist eVisa merely to qualify for entry before boarding a trip to Rwanda.
The traveler must still satisfy passport, travel-purpose, health and other applicable entry conditions.
East Africa Tourist Visa for Swiss Citizens
The East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) is worth considering when a Swiss traveler plans a genuine multi-country tourism itinerary involving Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. It is not normally necessary for a trip limited to Rwanda.
Rwanda’s current visitor-visa information lists the EATV as a multiple-entry regional tourist visa with a government fee of USD 100. It can be issued on arrival, online, through a Rwandan diplomatic mission or another location designated by immigration authorities. Work is not permitted.
Travelers should compare the EATV with the free 30-day Swiss arrangement based on their actual itinerary rather than choosing the EATV simply because it offers regional multiple-entry travel.
Rwanda Visa FAQs for Swiss Travelers
Do Swiss citizens need a visa for Rwanda?
Swiss citizens do not need to obtain an online visa before departure for an eligible short visit. As citizens of a La Francophonie member country, Swiss passport holders currently qualify for visa/visitor permission on arrival with the visa fee waived for a 30-day visit.
How long can Swiss citizens stay in Rwanda?
The standard fee-waived arrangement for Swiss citizens covers a visit of up to 30 days. Different visas have their own validity periods, entry conditions and permitted purposes.
Is Rwanda visa-free for Swiss passport holders?
It is more precise to describe the Swiss arrangement as fee-waived visa/visitor permission for a 30-day visit. Rwanda separately identifies a group of nationalities receiving a 90-day visa free of charge on arrival, and Switzerland is not on that list.
Does my passport need six months' validity?
Yes. Rwanda’s current visitor guidance requires a genuine acceptable travel document valid for at least six months. Travelers should check their passport validity before departure.
Can Swiss citizens get a Rwanda visa on arrival?
Yes. Rwanda allows citizens of all countries to obtain visas on arrival without prior application, and Swiss citizens additionally fall under the 30-day fee-waived La Francophonie arrangement.
How much is a Rwanda visa for Swiss citizens?
The applicable government visa fee for the ordinary 30-day Swiss short-visit arrangement is USD 0 because the fee is waived. A multiple-entry V1 holiday visa is currently listed at USD 70, while the East Africa Tourist Visa has a USD 100 government fee. Private application-assistance charges, if used, are separate.
Do I need an East Africa Tourist Visa?
Not for a Rwanda-only visit. The East Africa Tourist Visa is designed for regional tourism involving the participating East African countries. It may be relevant when the itinerary includes Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda and the traveler wants the regional multiple-entry option.
Can I work in Rwanda under visitor status?
No. Rwanda’s ordinary V1 holiday visa and the fee-waived visitor arrangement do not authorize employment. Travelers intending to work, study or reside in Rwanda should identify the appropriate immigration route before travel.
Review the Rules for Your Passport
For an ordinary Swiss short visit, focus first on the current 30-day fee-waived entry arrangement rather than purchasing an unnecessary tourist eVisa. Travelers with a different purpose, longer itinerary or multiple-entry requirement should check the Rwanda visa category that matches their plans.
